The Estate
Domaine Yves Gangloff is a renowned name in the world of fine Northern Rhône wines. Originally from Alsace, Yves Gangloff arrived in the region in the 1970s and began working at a local winery. Fascinated by these exceptional terroirs, he gradually acquired parcels of land and founded his own estate in the 1980s. Thanks to his meticulous approach and high standards, he quickly gained recognition in the wine world, producing outstanding Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, and Saint-Joseph wines. Today, the estate continues this tradition of excellence, captivating both wine lovers and critics worldwide.
The vineyard spans around ten hectares, spread across three prestigious appellations: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, and Saint-Joseph. The vines, planted on steep, rocky slopes, thrive in granite and schist soils, which impart great finesse to the wines. In Côte-Rôtie, Syrah is enhanced by a touch of Viognier, while Condrieu, made exclusively from Viognier, expresses the full richness and elegance of its terroir. The estate also produces red Saint-Joseph wines, where Syrah reveals a vibrant freshness and a more generous expression. The viticulture is rigorous, favoring careful manual work and a sustainable approach to preserve the vineyard’s natural balance.
In the cellar, Yves Gangloff and his team focus on achieving elegance and purity of fruit. The grapes are meticulously sorted and fermented with indigenous yeasts, ensuring an authentic expression of the terroir. The red wines are aged in oak barrels, with careful use of new wood to add structure and complexity without overpowering the wine. Côte-Rôtie wines are deep and refined, with silky tannins and aromas of black fruit, spices, and violets. Saint-Joseph wines offer a more accessible yet precise style, with a lovely fruit-driven profile and balanced structure. As for Condrieu, it displays a rich and floral aromatic palette, blending notes of apricot, peach, and honey, with a refined mineral tension. This meticulous craftsmanship makes Domaine Yves Gangloff an essential destination for lovers of great Rhône Valley wines.
The Wine
La Sereine Noire, the flagship cuvée of Domaine Yves Gangloff in Côte-Rôtie, comes from old Syrah vines rooted in schist soils. The winemaking process begins with native yeast fermentation and a long maceration, extracting deep color and complexity. The wine is then aged for approximately 24 months in oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new wood, adding structure and finesse while preserving the fruit’s natural elegance.
Tasting
La Sereine Noire reveals a deep hue with violet highlights. The intense nose combines blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, and spices, with subtle hints of cedar and tobacco. On the palate, the attack is broad, supported by a beautiful freshness and silky tannins. The long, complex finish showcases an elegant minerality and touches of black pepper, a signature of great Côte-Rôtie wines. A wine built for aging.
