The Estate
Domaine Rolly Gassmann was born from the union of two historic Alsatian winemaking families: the Gassmanns, based in Rorschwihr since 1661, and the Rollys, established in Rodern since the 17th century as well. In 1967, Marie-Thérèse Rolly married Louis Gassmann, joining the two lineages and founding what would become one of Alsace's iconic estates. Today, their son Pierre Gassmann runs the estate with deep respect for tradition and nature.
Located north of Colmar, the estate cultivates around 50 hectares of vines, mainly around Rorschwihr, a village renowned for its exceptional diversity of soils. Over 20 distinct soil types—ranging from marl to limestone to glacial deposits—allow each grape variety to express a unique character. Environmental respect is central to their philosophy: no herbicides or insecticides are used, and biodynamic principles are applied, though the estate chooses not to seek official certification.
Rolly Gassmann wines are instantly recognizable: often off-dry to sweet, they are rich, layered, and always supported by excellent freshness. The estate produces all classic Alsace varietals, with exceptional mastery of Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris. Long aging and delayed bottling allow the wines to reach remarkable aromatic complexity. A benchmark in Alsace, the domaine appeals equally to seasoned connoisseurs and curious newcomers thanks to the richness and accessibility of its wines.
The Wine
Tasting
Intense golden hue with amber highlights, bright and crystal-clear, indicating great concentration. The nose is opulent and complex, blending dried rose petals, candied lychee, and acacia honey. The palate is smooth and enveloping, with a dense sweetness perfectly balanced by a structuring acidity. The harmony between sweetness, freshness, and aromatic complexity is truly remarkable.
