Château Larruau is one of those little nuggets that you can taste again and again, always surprised by its concentration, density and finesse. It's a wine that could easily be a 5th cru classé, but which remains confidential, at a very affordable price for this level of quality, much to our delight. Typical of the Margaux appellation, Château Larruau offers a wine of enormous concentration, which nevertheless reveals great subtlety, depth and finesse.
The Château Larruau vineyard, which includes the former Château Dubignon, 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855, is made up of 35 parcels located at the qualitative heart of the Margaux terroir, close to the appellation's greatest growths, such as Châteaux Lascombes, Palmer and Rauzan-Ségla. A significant proportion of these parcels adjoin Château Margaux.
Struggling with economic difficulties and dispersed on several occasions, the estate fell out of favor after the Second World War. It was gradually rebuilt in the early 1970s thanks to the persistence and hard work of its current owner, Bernard Château. In 2019, he entrusts the management of the estate to Miguel Martinho, owner of the eponymous château, with whom he became friends in the early 1990s.
The diversity of this vineyard, planted on the appellation's best plateaux of gravel, silt, clay and limestone, creates a viticultural entity that is highly representative of the many nuances of the Margaux terroir. Château Larruau has been organically farmed since its 2023 vintage.
Elegant as one would expect from a top-class Margaux, Château Larruau is a true gem that has nothing to envy from its neighbors. Capable of aging well or being enjoyed young, it stands out with its licorice and spicy notes, complemented by aromas of dark fruits. The silky texture on the palate is admirable. Great length.
