The Estate

When Pascale and Pierre Gaillard arrived in Malleval in 1981, everything was yet to be done. Pierre started by clearing and planting his first vines at Clos de Cuminaille in the Saint-Joseph appellation. Since then, he has built a vineyard with his own hands, covering twenty-five hectares on the steepest slopes of the northern Rhône Valley.

Considered by his peers and seasoned tasters as a benchmark in the northern Rhône Valley, Pierre now works closely with his three children. Together, they perpetuate the Gaillard touch by offering full-bodied wines that are always imbued with finesse and elegance.

This Saint-Joseph comes from the northern part of the appellation. The granite is very well-drained, a characteristic that is accentuated by the slopes. The continental climate with a Mediterranean influence provides sparse but regular rainfall, limiting drought issues on this terroir.

The winemaking process is traditional. The Syrah grapes are destemmed beforehand to ensure the wine retains all its elegance. The extraction is gentle and prolonged to achieve silky tannins. Placed in barrels before the start of malolactic fermentation, the wine gradually integrates with the wood.

The nose evokes a basket of red fruits with notes of gingerbread. On the palate, this Saint-Joseph is straightforward with a sense of indulgence and suppleness. It offers great balance and precision, making it a delightful wine. Best enjoyed young, within 15 years.
