The Estate

Located in Ardèche, specifically in Mauves, the Pierre Gonon estate is a family-owned vineyard covering 10 hectares that produces exclusively under the AOC Saint-Joseph designation. Brothers Pierre and Jean Gonon have elevated the estate to the pinnacle of the appellation through their uncompromising work in the vineyard. They have been certified organic since 2011. The estate prefers the freshness of the grapes over excessive ripeness. The whites can age for 10 years, if not longer. The reds offer a nuanced interpretation of Syrah, never overly demonstrative.

Vineyard and Terroir: The Gonon family’s vines are located on steep slopes in the Mauves and Tournon regions, at the heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation. These granite soils, with southeast exposure, provide the wine with great minerality and a unique expression of the Syrah grape.

Organic Cultivation and Manual Work: The Gonons work their vines organically, with manual interventions including pruning, debudding, and harvesting. They minimize the use of chemicals and employ natural methods to preserve the soil's biodiversity.

Harvest and Sorting: The grapes are hand-picked, usually at optimal ripeness to achieve a perfect balance between freshness and fruit maturity. A meticulous sorting process is carried out to select only the healthiest clusters.

Traditional Vinification:

  • The clusters are partially destemmed, which allows for a portion of the stems to be kept, adding structure and complexity to the wine.
  • Fermentation takes place in open vats, using indigenous yeasts, with no commercial yeasts added, to preserve the natural character of the wine.
  • The Gonons favor gentle maceration with moderate punch-downs and pump-overs to subtly extract aromas and tannins.

Aging: The wine is then aged in oak barrels for about 12 to 14 months. The barrels used are not new (typically between 1 and 4 wines) to avoid overpowering the fruit and minerality with excessive oak influence.

Bottling: The wine is bottled without filtration or with very light filtration to preserve its texture and aromatic integrity. Sulfur use is moderate, added only to stabilize the wine before bottling.

The result is an elegant, complex, and balanced Saint-Joseph wine that beautifully expresses Syrah on granite soils. Gonon's wines are appreciated for their finesse, freshness, and great aging potential.
